SHOTS IN ACTION.......1987-8

The Shots beat the drop back to Division Four thanks to a point gained in the final game of the season at fellow relegation troubled side Grimsby Town!, Rotherham United a point worse off than the Shots went down. The first half of the season went pretty well and indeed December and the Chistmas period saw the Shots defeated just once a 0-3 reverse at Brentford. Surely some of the best football ever seen at the Rec was played a this time including hitting Gillingham for six, Bristol Rovers beaten 3-0 plus a win at Preston; and a point gained at Brighton. However the wheels fell of after this and a run of six games without a goal in late March and early April made survival look increasingly unlikely, however the three remaining home games saw two 3-0 victories over Port Vale and Mansfield plus a point against Preston leaving just one point to make survival certain in the final match which hosts Grimsby also need to win to have a chance of staying up. The Shots got it sending Grimsby down in the process.
