Hereford United v Shots 1972/3

The SHOT last met HEREFORD UNITED ?

October 12th 1991

HEREFORD UNITED 1 (1) ALDERSHOT 0 (0)

This defeat in the depressing 1991/2 season was in fact the Shots eight consecutive loss at Hereford since 1982! Not exactly one of the Shots happier hunting grounds. Let’s hope the new Shots can start a run of better results at Edgar Street on Monday!

Back to 1991 and a pretty forgettable encounter which saw the Shots managed by Brian Talbot give a good account of themselves until it came to putting the ball in the net. The games only goal was scored by Peter Heritage after 36 minutes.

Aldershot’s first league game at Hereford was in division four back in the 1972/3 season when United had just gained election to the Football League, however the Shots came away with nothing losing 1-0 although the return game at the Rec saw the Shots run out victors by two clear goals thanks to strikes from Steve Melledew and Jack Howarth before a healthy 7,082 spectators. One familiar name leaps out from the United side goalkeeper David Icke, I wonder if there is any truth in that football saying that all goalkeepers are a little crazy…… A great season for both clubs of course as Hereford and Aldershot were promoted to Division Three. One match between the two clubs that lingers in the mind was the home game at the Rec in the 1980/1 campaign, when Mark Sanford scored all the goals in the Shots 4-0 win including a hat-trick in five minutes!
