The SHOTS met CHESTER CITY

1987/8 Division 3 - February 6th 1988

ALDERSHOT (1) 4 CHESTER CITY (1) 1

An afternoon to remember especially for Shots Captain Ian McDonald who scored his first ever hat-trick in 18 years as a professional. The match seemed to be heading for a draw until Mac struck with two goals in two minutes!

It was McDonald who opened the scoring with a volley in the 18th minute after being set-up by Glyn Riley. Chester levelled things six minutes before the break through Graham Barrow, when he fired home passed an unsighted Tony Lange. Then with less then thirty minutes of the game remaining Mac struck with two goals, first he latched onto a loose ball on the edge of the box and lifted a delightful chip that left Chester keeper Billy Stewart tumbling as it dropped just below the crossbar and into the net (61). Then straight from the kick off it was that man McDonald again after good set-up play by Glen Burvill McDonald kept the ball on his toes in the box before swivelling and turning lashing the ball into the Chester net giving keeper Stewart no chance (62). The game was wrapped up by Mike Ring, after Burvill again provided the killer cross to find Ring’s head and he powered a header into the net on 78 minutes. Referee for the afternoon was Billy Durkin son of 50’s Shots hard man Billy Durkin…..and managed not one booking in the game! Unheard of these days.
